“The Way It Was”: Abortion in the US before Roe v. Wade.
I was thinking about this article and this is really one of my favourite articles ever. Really powerful.
Reblogging for the same reason ^
I want to print out this article and personally hand it to every “til abortion ends” loser giving up soda and candy bars until we WAHHH STOP KILLING BABIES. Abortion has always existed and will always exist.
Some notable excerpts:
“Under the PBAB of 2003, a D&X [Dilation & Extraction] would be permitted only to save the woman’s life or if the fetus is dead. It would require a girl who’d been impregnated by her uncle, father, or brother, and who, out of shame, ignorance, and fear had hidden her condition until it was obvious to the world, to carry the fetus to term and give birth. If a woman discovers, late in her pregnancy, that the fetus has, say, anencephaly—a brain stem but no actual brain—then she must carry it to term, give birth, and let it die on its own.”
…
“One doctor’s “awakening” is vividly described in The Worst of Times, a collection of interviews with women, cops, coroners, and practitioners from the illegal abortion era. In 1948, when this doctor was an intern in a Pittsburgh hospital, a woman was admitted with severe pelvic sepsis after a bad abortion. She was beautiful, married to someone important and wealthy, and already in renal failure. Over the next couple of days, despite heroic efforts to save her, a cascade of systemic catastrophes due to the overwhelming infection culminated with the small blood vessels bursting under her skin, bruises breaking out everywhere as if some invisible fist were punching her over and over, and she died. Being well-to-do didn’t always save you.
Her death was so horrible that it made him, he recalls, physically ill. He describes his anger, but says he didn’t quite know with whom to be angry. It took him another 20 years to understand that it was not the abortionist who killed her—it was the legal system, the lawmakers who had forced her away from the medical community, who “…killed her just as surely as if they had held the catheter or the coat hanger or whatever. I’m still angry. It was all so unnecessary.” “
…
“In the same book, a man who assisted in autopsies in a big urban hospital, starting in the mid-1950s, describes the many deaths from botched abortions that he saw. “The deaths stopped overnight in 1973.” [After the passing of Roe v. Wade] He never saw another in the 18 years before he retired. “That,” he says, “ought to tell people something about keeping abortion legal.” “

fuck the patriarchy
i get that this is a fluff site but it’s still sickening how prominent and accepted this is in our culture. this shit is the front news article of yahoo!, what is that supposed to communicate to women?!
That our bodies serve a specific purpose, and it is the viewing pleasure of men. Obviously, you should be picking your swimsuit based on the male gaze and not on, y’know, what makes you feel happy and good about yourself.
“A few even compared the concept as being synonymous to men wearing T-shirts in the pool.”
Get it? ‘Cuz men are ENTITLED to look at and judge our nearly naked bodies, so tankinis are CHEATING.
In related news, all the men who participated in this survey met afterwards to drink Jaeger bombs and high five each other while yelling “No fatties!”, where they were all murdered by an unknown 6’1” blonde assailant wearing a t-shirt saying “MISANDRY 4 LIFE”.
OH GOODIE, I don’t think women as a whole were concerned enough about what they looked like in a swimsuit. It’s been at least 30 seconds since I’ve seen an ad referencing the phrase “bikini body” so obviously the patriarchy needs to work harder.

There’s this yellow object in the sky today and… it feels weird. Like I want to take all my clothes off. And then my skin if possible.
I just don’t know. I’ve never seen one of those in Wales before.
Love!

FUCK FLATTERING

Not sure that I’ve ever been so honored to introduce someone as I am right now.
Gac Filipaj is a refugee from the former Yugoslavia. For the past twelve years, he has worked as a janitor for Columbia University. His job title is “Heavy Cleaner,” which includes emptying the trash and cleaning the toilets.
During this time, he worked until 11pm every night during the week. After his shift concluded, he would start studying. This weekend, after twelve years of study, Gac graduated from Columbia University with a Classics degree. Rarely have so many qualities I admire been wrapped up in a single person.

yes.
I watched this last night on tv and I thought to myself, “that will be on tumblr soon.”
I’m coming around on ol’ Kristen.

She gets it.
